Notes from the Pastor
Our epistle this week from 2nd Timothy admonishes us to “hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me.” This admonishment is as relevant today as it was in the first century. The difficulty for us lies in the fact that unless we know what the standard of sound teaching is we will not know if we are holding to it. We may be holding to things we believe the Church teaches, because we have heard it from the TV, movies or newspapers but we may be mistaken. The recent visit of the Pope to Great Britain revealed a whole group of journalists, writers and TV commentators who were completely mistaken as to what the Church teaches and why.
SO, the best way to be sure that you know what the standard of sound teaching is to read the Catechism! Read it alone, read it as husband and wife, read it as family, read it with friends – even those who are Catholic. Talk about it, try to understand it, learn from it. If you do this you will know the standard of sound teaching. Then live it! If you go this one step further, you will be fulfilling Paul’s admonition to “ hold” to the standard of sound teaching, a standard which, ultimately, is Jesus himself.
